PAN Access Advisory

Confluence of Hazel & Thornton Rivers At Butler Ford Rd near Monumental Mills

Information from news article.

Access at the confluence of the Hazel and Thornton Rivers, near Monumental Mills, on Butler Ford Rd, has been CLOSED.

From the news article (click here), VDOT and state attorneys have gotten involved, tempers are inflamed, and someone has fired a shotgun.

A map check suggests that there is POTENTIAL for access at the SR 640 bridge a couple of hundred yards above the confluence, or along SR 640 a couple of hundred yards below the confluence.

CAUTION: this information is speculative and has not been verified on the ground.

MORE CAUTION:  the news article suggests that peculiarities of at least one landowner’s title may give them claim to the SURFACE of the river, so even floating through may be problematic.  The news article indicates that at least 3 landowners are upset, so several sections of river in this area maybe affected.

PLEASE NOTE: Most private owners and organizations never invite paddlers to use their land.  Many are kind enough to tolerate it.  Just as we paddle at our own risk, we use advisories, parking spaces, and access sites at our own risk.
